The TELEVOID system and feeds are now available for use in your worlds! The scripts and prefab itself is provided under GPL 3.0, so for the most part, you can do whatever with them.

Use the TELEVOID feeds however you want, except you may not charge for access to the TELEVOID feeds in any form. Your use of the feeds must be strictly non-profit. Do not sell them, and do not charge for access to them in your worlds. This restriction does not apply if you provide your own feeds.

I’ll try my best to keep the feeds up as much as possible, but I make no guarantees about uptime.

Basic Setup

To set this up, you’ll need ProTV by ArchitechVR set up in your project before you import the package.

Make sure ProTV 3.0 or higher is installed, then import the TELEVOID System package. Locate the TVSystem prefab inside of “K-9 Software/TELEVOID TV System”. Drag it into your scene; it should appear as a white cube. This is the object that both contains the guide script and that users will interact with to summon the guide, so place it in an accessible place. If you’d like to change its mesh, you can either copy the script component from it to another object, or you can change the mesh set in the Mesh Filter component.

Next, place the “Simple (ProTV)” prefab located in “Packages/ArchiTech.ProTV” in your scene and position it. You can optionally disable the controls to prevent the TV from being overridden.

Check the properties on the “Guide Grabber Parser” script on the TVSystem object. If you want to just use the TELEVOID feeds, all you need to change on this are:

• Guide Spawn Location
• Pass Remote View
• Video Player

To set the spawn location of the guide, create a new empty and position it roughly where you’d like it to be. In the Assets view, find “K-9 Software/TELEVOID TV System/Prefabs” and drag the TVGuideCanvas prefab onto your spawn location empty. Move, scale, and rotate the spawn location empty until the guide is in the desired position.

For the Remote Pass Canvas, drag and drop the RemotePassCanvas prefab located in “K-9 Software/TELEVOID TV System” to your scene. Enable it, then Move, scale, and rotate it to its desired position. Once done, disable it again, then delete the TVGuideCanvas you spawned on the location empty.

With your scene elements placed, set the properties on the GuideGrabberParser script. “Guide Spawn Location” should be set to the guide positioning empty. Pass Remote View should be set to the remote pass canvas. Video Player should be set to the ProTV prefab.

If everything was set correctly, you should now be able to play the scene, click on the object that contains the script, and have the guide appear and be functional.

Note: If you haven’t yet played this scene with the ProTV in it yet, you may be prompted to install the AVPro shim. Follow the on-screen guide to install the shim, then play the scene again.

Advanced setup (Running your own feeds)

I’ll expand this section with a proper step-by-step in the near future, but for now, here’s the sparknotes for the technically inclined:

• Set up an ErsatzTV instance, get it connected to a media library, and create and schedule up to 4 channels.
• Set up the TELEVOID XMLTV Converter with the instructions provided in the README.
• Configure NGINX as a reverse proxy for ErsatzTV (taking care that only the feeds & guide info remain accessible, do not accidentally make the management interface publicly accessible). As well, configure it to serve the generated guide JSON and JPG out of the static folder the XMLTV Converter outputs to.
• Check that your generated feeds and guide metadata are accessible from the web.
• If all’s good, set up the TELEVOID System using the instructions above. Once done, additionally change the following properties on the GuideGrabberParser script:
  • URL: set this to the URL for your guide.json file
  • Guide Image URL: set this to the URL for your guide JPG file
  • Channel URLs: set the length of the array to the number of channels you have and insert the links to the .ts for each stream here. Make sure to put the channels here in the same order they appear in your guide metadata!
• Lastly, edit the channels.txt file located in “K-9 Software/TELEVOID TV System”. Place one entry in here for each channel in the same order they appear in your guide metadata. Entries are in the following format: 1;CODE;Channel Name
  • 1; channel number. currently unused
  • CODE; channel shortcode used for guide row entry. any text, ideally less than 7 characters
  • Channel Name: the long name of the channel

This should work for creating your own feeds. If you encounter issues with this process, reach out and I’ll try to get it sorted.

To celebrate my fancy new blog, I’ll give a brief overview of how it works.

My initial idea was to do a wordpress– I’ve done plenty of those in my time– but then I realized the concept of setting up and securing another wordpress for myself horrified me, so I looked into other options. I had heard of static site generators, but never used one before. After a bit of research, I settled on Hugo. Is it the best? I don’t know, but so far I don’t mind it and it seems to have pretty extensive community support.

I wanted a blog and a gallery, so I set up two different Hugo sites and I’ve configured NGINX to serve them at different locations. The root page brings you here, and the theme I’ve used is neopost, which I like because it has way more personality than most of the sanitary options that are available, and it reminds me of the bygone era of personal blogs. The gallery, available at /gallery, runs on Autophugo.

The plan for this blog is to supplement my Bluesky and act as a site to keep any of my long-winded rambles without having to post them in long, broken up threads. When I release things, this is also probably where I’ll keep the files.

There’s not much else to say! I’ve made some minor customizations to the theme, but not much that you couldn’t figure out in a few minutes and a google search. The most extensive modification is the “Song of the minute”, which I wrote to learn how to use Hugo. Here’s that code!

Hugo’s syntax is really weird. It’s certainly usable, but it feels archaic? I might need some getting used to it. Because the pages are static, I have a cron job running to rebuild the page every minute (hence song of the minute). I could’ve done this with some Javascript and a list of songs so the selection occurs on the browser, but I didn’t want to. (Also, keen-eyed readers may have noticed that my code will break on songs whose titles start with a number. My solution is to not include any songs where the title starts with a number.)

The same cron job also pulls the latest version of the site down from my personal Gitlab server, so I can just git-push it there whenever I want to commit a new post or change. I mostly only mention this because I want to share what may be the world’s most cursed Gitlab server. It’s a Raspberry Pi 4 with two 512GB USB sticks stuck in it for storage.

If you’re wondering why there’s two USB sticks, it’s because they’re in RAID 1. Data security is important! Surely nothing bad can happen to my data now, it’s foolproof. (This is a bit. I am the fool. Don’t do as I do, because I do bad ideas for a laugh.)

It’s actually pretty usable.

The TELEVOID is a world I made to replicate the feeling of watching TV in the early 00’s, when I was a kid. I ended up making a fake TV with 4 channels that play scheduled content. An in-world TV guide lets users view what’s coming up next and see details about current/future airings.

The live channel feeds are produced by a broadcast server running ErsatzTV hooked up to a Jellyfin server for media. ErsatzTV is open-source software that controls scheduling and stream generation, and this couldn’t have happened without it. Thanks, ETV contributors!

ETV generates the feeds and XMLTV guide info. A small helper program I wrote runs every minute, reads the guide information, and converts it into a smaller JSON file. As well, it gets the poster image for each entry and bakes them all into a single image representing an 8x8 grid of posters, squishing each one vertically to fit. Each grid position has an int index, and this index is inserted into each guide entry in the JSON to store where to find that entry’s poster. The completed JSON guide information and baked poster grid are written to disk.

Finally, to make this all available in VRChat, an NGINX server acts as reverse proxy for the ETV server feeds, as well as serving the JSON and poster grid. Once all that is done we can get everything in two requests in-game. Yippee! (The image baking is necessary to work around VRChat limitations, particularly that you can only make one image request every 10 seconds, which makes loading posters individually impractical.)

When you interact with the remote in the world we fetch the prepared guide info, parse the JSON, spawn a guide template prefab, and populate it with the data. I’ll share three tricks that make this work:

One, when we parse the JSON we feed it into an abomination I like to call the object[][][]. Udon doesn’t have official support for classes or lists and at the time I wrote this they were not yet available for UdonSharp so instead we read everything into a 3-deep nested object array where the format is ’entries[channel_no][entry_no][data_type]’. When we read from the object[][][] we just cast everything back to what it’s supposed to be. This is an absolutely disgusting trick but it works.

The second trick is that, as far as I can tell, there’s no way to directly detect input from a UI button in an UdonBehaviour if the button was spawned at runtime. Ordinarily you place a static button in your world and have it send a custom message to your script, but when you spawn one from a prefab at runtime there is no way go give it a reference to the script which exists outside the prefab. To solve this, each button also has a Light component on it. The light itself is always disabled so it doesn’t do anything or cause performance issues, but we steal some of its parameters to store data in. When we spawn each button prefab, we use the light’s intensity value to store the channel_no, and the range to store the entry_no.

The last part is that the Button component on each prefab is configured to set its own light component color temperature to a known value that indicates that button was clicked. The guide script checks each button on update to see if any have had their color temperature change. If we find one, then we can read its corresponding light values to know the indexes to get its info from the object[][][]. There’s probably a better way to do this, but I haven’t found it, and this seems to scale well even to mobile.

Third trick: how do we display only one poster from the grid and stretch it to fit? The answer in this case is UV trickery. By changing the XY tiling to 1/8 on the material, and by changing the XY offsets by 1/8 intervals, we can “slide” which portion of the grid the material shows.

Applying this material to a stretched rect transform stretches the poster back out for us automatically. There are slight seams around the edges, but overall I’m very pleased with the result.

Anyways, that’s it! If you happen to be the, like, one person that reads this to the end I wanted to extend a big “thank you”. This is the first VRC project I’ve released and I am very excited to talk about it in case any of my silly tricks inspire anyone out there. I hope to have more to post about– and release– in the near future! I also hope to update and improve the TELEVOID so more people may use and enjoy it.

Addendum

What’s next? Well, there’s a few things I’d like to improve:

• First, content is scheduled too naively. Any eligible program for a channel is chosen at random and scheduled for broadcast. This can lead to some really weird lineups and fails to maintain programming cohesion. I’d like to make blocks of themed programming, different schedules for different days, seasonal programming, etc. That’s step one!

• Step two is working out commercials. The server currently has about 4000 commercials, which is a lot, but you still start to notice repeats after a time. I’d like to expand it with more.

  • As well, similar to the shows, scheduling for commercials is pretty dumb. The server just plays 3 commercials between programs on eligible channels. This means that you can get totally incongruent commercials in the same break. You might get a commercial for a children’s toy followed by a commercial for DOOM (1994), and stuff like that. I need to organize all of the commercials into their age-appropriateness and what they advertise so that I can program them to play more cohesively with programming, but it’ll take a long while to sort through and organize all of them by hand.

• Third up, I’d like to clean the codebase up a little and get it ready for public release. I really would like to release the “TELEVOID Television System” as a public prefab!

  • There’s a problem with this that I haven’t yet solved whichis this: should the prefab include access to the TELEVOID feeds? I want to ask people to set up their own feeds, but it takes a lot of work and technical knowledge to do so, so I doubt many would go to the trouble. I could provide the feeds, but if the prefab ends up being used a lot, the concurrent watching across worlds may exceed what my server/bandwidth are capable of. As well, being in more worlds makes the TELEVOID more conspicuous. I don’t exactly have the rights to the things that are there. I’m avoiding broadcasting anything too dangerous (as a rule of thumb, I only try to include something if it’s the sort of show you can already find on Youtube for free), but there’s always the possibility I get unwanted attention if the TELEVOID happens to spread outside of my control.

• Lastly, I’d like to put something out there. In the VOID. There’s nothing now, but I yearn to hide something out there…
